Public relations agency intern ponders Foursquare

June 14, 2011 7:45pm

Hello, Karla here, one of Konnect PR’s new interns. I was recently tweeting about NBC’s new show The Voice, when I started to think about another social media outlet that has been sadly neglected in my Blackberry- Foursquare.

Now it is well known how important social media is to LA publicists (as well as to us future LA publicists), so when I had first heard about Foursquare last year and how it would change the world of new businesses and public relations, I immediately signed up for an account. For those who are not too familiar with Foursquare, it is basically like a Facebook check-in, and if you are always checking-in at lets say, Chipotle (yum), you become the mayor of that certain Chiptole. As a reward for customer loyalty Chipotle might offer you a free drink or chips. So it was a huge incentive for public relations professionals to encourage their clients to use Foursquare in order to increase clientele. I loved the idea and checking-in became rather addicting.

However, I started to notice that while becoming mayor gave me major bragging rights, not that many places offered rewards to their mayors. I also started to notice that Foursquare was not gaining popularity among the public.  As we say in public relations, the return-on-investment, or ROI was not high enough for me to remain a fan of the social media outlet. Besides, the social media king, Facebook, had already launched their own system of checking-in, making it so much easier to satisfy my checking-in addiction without giving me the false hope of presenting me with an award.

As I sat there, impatiently waiting for The Voice to come back from a commercial break, I started to somewhat miss Foursquare and wondered if it would ever really catch on. Twitter at first had trouble gaining users, especially within the college student crowd, but now it is quickly becoming mainstream and is a huge asset to the LA Public Relations field. Will Foursquare have the same luck?

Best,

Karla

Spears

March 4, 2011 1:18pm

Even with a rough past from 2004-2007, our very own child star pop princess Miss Britney Spears never seems to leave our interest. Still at the age of 29, Britney Spears still strives to be one of the most renown and talented artists in today’s society. Spears has even been chosen to be on the cover of V Magazine’s Spring issue. It was recently stated on V Magazine’s Spring Issue that Spears’  life as a mother to her two children changed her perspectives on life.

After interning at a LA Public relations agency, the job of a publicist is a prime contributing factor to upholding a celebrities image. A publicist has to constantly keep up with the star’s life, think of new ways to promote the star, and always keep an eye for what the consumer desires. Of course, with the trends and technology of our society constantly changing, it is a hard task to uphold. Hence why I give major gold stars to all Public relations agency.

What also brought this topic to mind was a course I am taking called, “The Communication Revolution, Entertainment, and the Arts” at the University of Southern California, taught by Princeton graduate Professor Jonathan Taplin, known for having a plethora of works in the entertainment business which include, Band Manager, Producer, Investment Advisor, a board member of the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.  Taplin’s lectures on topics of consumerism opened my eyes to see that the mass always needs to be appeased to keep the entertainer’s success exponentially growing.  It is the publicist’s duty to keep the integrity and positive image of the celebrity and appeal to the wider audience. Because of today’s consumers and constant need of being satisfied with whatever entertainment can provide, a pr agency is what can aid artists such as Britney Spears to stay true to our interests.

Spear’s new album Femme Fatale is set to hit stores March 29, 2011. Good luck Brit!
